Circle Sun And Moon

While mostly known and often quoted for being the oldest color depiction of the city of Stockholm, Vädersolstavlan (Swedish; "The Sundog Painting", literally "The Weather Sun Painting") is arguably also one of the oldest known depictions of a halo display, including a pair of sun dogs. For two hours in the morning of 20 April 1535, the skies over the city were filled with white circles and arcs crossing the sky, while additional suns (i.e., sun dogs) appeared around the sun.

Light pillars can also form around the moon, and around street lights or other bright lights. Pillars forming from ground-based light sources may appear much taller than those associated with the sun or moon. Since the observer is closer to the light source, crystal orientation matters less in the formation of these pillars.

The earliest experimental studies on halo phenomena have been attributed[16] to Auguste Bravais in 1847.[17] Bravais used an equilateral glass prism which he spun around its vertical axis. When illuminated by parallel white light, this produced an artificial Parhelic circle and many of the embedded parhelia. Similarly, A. Wegener used hexagonal rotating crystals to produce artificial subparhelia.[18] In a more recent version of this experiment, many more embedded parhelia have been found using commercially available[19] hexagonal BK7 glass crystals.[20] Simple experiments like these can be used for educational purposes and demonstration experiments.[13][21] Unfortunately, using glass crystals one cannot reproduce the circumzenithal arc or the circumhorizontal arc due to total internal reflections preventing the required ray-paths when n

The Sun would have been surrounded by a disk of gas and dust early in its history when the solar system was first forming 4.6 billion years ago. Some of that dust is still around today, in several dust rings that circle the Sun. They trace the orbits of planets, whose gravity tugs dust into place around the Sun.

A magic circle (魔法陣, Mahoujin) is a figure composed by a great number of symbols related to the powers, techniques and precedence of the magician. Generally, the magic circles are what differentiates mages from one another, each creates a magic circle of their own - similar to that of a signature.

Magic circles work as a field of energy that activates the moment a mage is about to perform a spell. This magic circle is visible under the mage's feet, and its power surrounds him/her as if it was a Ki or aura.

The figure for Clow's magic circle consists of a 12 point-star, with the symbols of the cardinal points inside the corners. It has the image of the sun in the centre, and next to it is the moon. Clow's magic is symbolized by "light and darkness".

As revealed after the climax of the "Sakura Card Arc", Clow Reed's magic was imbalanced in its nature; as shown in Clow Reed's magic circle, the design of the circle is dominated by the sun and the moon symbols; the sun representing 'Yang' (陽) and Cerberus, and the moon representing 'Yin' (陰) as well as Yue. The arrangement of the sun and the moon in the circle highlights the nature of the imbalance; the sun takes centre-stage, while the moon is pushed to the side; the balance of Clow Reed's magic is tipped in favour of yang over yin. As his incarnation, Eriol, reveals after Sakura succeeded in transforming all of the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards:

This imbalance that caused Clow Reed's problems was also the reason behind his unusually-long life span. In contrast to Clow Reed's magic circle, Sakura's star takes centre-stage, holding the sun and the moon in place, the yin and yang in her magic kept in balance.

The main symbol in Sakura's magic circle is the star within it. Like Clow's, it forms a 10-point star with three squares, surrounding these are the symbols of the Western Zodiac. Next to the 10-point star in the center are the sun and the moon. These represent Cerberus and Yue, who protect the star, meaning Sakura.

During the final confrontation with Eriol Hiiragizawa, Cerberus and Yue's powers are combined into Sakura's staff. This once more transforms her staff into a final Guardian version, although the magic circle stays the same.

Unlike the previous gold-outlined magic circles, Sakura's new magic circle has more than one color. The inner circle is blue while the stars are a lighter blue. The outer circle that houses the 5-pointed stars, element, sun and moon symbols is a light pink-purple color.

In the Sakura Card Arc in the manga, Syaoran Li is seen using a magic circle similar to the centre of the rashiban, while trying to divine the owner of the coat left on an unconscious-Sakura after Windy was remade from a Clow Card into a Sakura Card.

Yuna's magic circle is dark purple, which matches the pattern on his pocketwatch. In the center is half of a circle with a grid-like design, similar to that used to visual time and space being warped. The seven phases of the moon arc over the grid design. The upper half of the circle has another circle. The outer ring of the circle is similar in shape to a cog.

In the 5th century B.C., Empedocles and Anaxagoras offered arguments for the spherical nature of the Earth. During a lunar eclipse, when the Earth is between the sun and the moon, they identified the shadow of the Earth on the moon. As the shadow moves across the moon it is clearly round. This would suggest that the Earth is a sphere.

Lunar eclipses also allowed for another key understanding about our home here on Earth. In 3rd Century B.C., Aristarchus of Samos reasoned he could figure out the size of the Earth based on information available during a lunar eclipse. The diagram at the right illustrates a translation of his work. The large circle is the sun, the medium circle is the Earth and the smallest circle is the moon. When the Earth is in-between the sun and the moon it causes a lunar eclipse and measuring the size of the Earth's shadow on the moon provided part of the information he needed to calculate its size.

In contrast to the terrestrial, the celestial region of the heavens had a fundamentally different nature. Looking at the night sky the ancient Greeks found two primary kinds of celestial objects; the fixed stars and the wandering stars. Think of the night's sky. Most of the visible objects appear to move at exactly the same speed and present themselves in exactly the same arrangement night after night. These are the fixed stars. They appear to move all together. Aside from these were a set of nine objects that behaved differently, the moon, the sun and the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter each moved according to a different system. For the Greeks these were the wandering stars.

In this system the entire universe was part of a great sphere. This sphere was split into two sections, an outer celestial realm and an inner terrestrial one. The dividing line between the two was the orbit of the moon. While the earth was a place of transition and flux, the heavens were unchanging. Aristotle posited that there was a fifth substance, the quintessence, that was what the heavens were made of, and that the heavens were a place of perfect spherical motion.

By the time of Ptolemy Greek astronomers had proposed adding circles on the circular orbits of the wandering stars (the planets, the moon and the sun) to explain their motion. These circles on circles are called epicycles. In the Greek tradition, the heavens were a place of perfect circular motion, so the way to account for perfection was with the addition of circles. This resulted in disorienting illustrations.

To escape the complicated nature of this extensive number of circles, Ptolomy added a series of new concepts. To accurately describe planetary motion, he needed to use eccentric circles. With the eccentric circle the center of the planets orbit would not be Earth but would instead be some other point. Ptolemy then needed to put the epicycles on another set of circles called deferents. So the planets moved on circles that moved on circular orbits. Ptolomy also needed to introduce equants, a tool that enabled the planets to move at different speeds as they moved around these circles. The resulting model was complex, but it had extensive predictive power.

A halo is a ring or light that forms around the sun or moon as the sun or moon light refracts off ice crystals present in a thin veil of cirrus clouds. The halo is usually seen as a bright, white ring although sometimes it can have color.

The design of the magic circle resembles a German Iron Cross surrounded by a circular perimeter. The writings on the magic circle are in Hebrew. On each of the arms of the cross are the names of the angels who preside over wind, fire, earth and water: Chasan, Arel, Phorlakh, and Taliahad. Similarly, between the arms of the cross are the four great kings of the elements: Ariel, Seraph, Tharshis, and Cherub. The words written around the perimeter are from Psalms 116:16-17 of the Bible, stating "The Lord has freed me from my chains. I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call on the name of the Lord." (original in-game translation)

It is used to borrow the power of the Sun in order to free the user from their bonds, whether physical or mental. According to Maria, the murders of the first twilight are offered as sacrifices to gain the power of this magic circle.

The design of the magic circle resembles a representation of a door. The Hebrew verse on it is taken from Psalms 107:16, and say "For he has broken gates of brass and cuts through bars of iron" (original in-game translation).

The magic circle has two effects. It allows the user to open any door regardless of how it was locked, and it also grants one the power of observation to find a solution (door) in a difficult situation. 041b061a72
